The province is set to hold the 7th Kannawidan Ylocos Festival from Jan. 29 to Feb. 9 this year to mark the 195th founding anniversary of the province of Ilocos Sur. The Kannawidan Festival was first initiated by then Governor Deogracias Victor “DV” Savellano in 2008 to mark the 190th founding day of Ilocos Sur. “Our festival this year will feature competitions in traditional choral singing, rituals, beauty search, painting, fashion show and zarzuela (opera) Ilocana,” Governor Singson said.

Several sporting events are also up like horse racing, fun run, amazing race competition, kite boarding in Magsingal town; dragon boat racing and Frisbee challenge to be held at the pristine beaches of Cabugao town; practical shooting, motorcycling show and racing competition; and awarding of the top barangays of the province. Singson said that Ilocos Sur’s culture and traditions are well known, well-preserved and will always be fun and enjoyable to watch. Governor Singson is also set to launch “Sure Ilocos Sur” as part of his tourist agenda noting that all what the tourists want to see can be easily seen and experienced in the province.

The festival not only brings us takes one back to the roots; it also enables one to look into the future through art created by children. Their art speaks of their belief in the beauty of the world as gift from the Creator. Their songs and dances outshine any sadness  this present world has thrown at them.
